Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or webpage on a search engine results page (SERP) to make a company website more accessible (i.e., page/pages), thus driving traffic. and sales. It is stressful, involves technical and business decisions, and does not guarantee results — yet it does bring lasting benefits.


SEO often involves the concerted effort of many departments within an organization, including design, marketing, and content production teams. While some SEO work involves business analysis (e.g., comparing personal content with competitors), a large part depends on the algorithms of the various search engine rankings, which can change over time. However, the sixth rule is that websites and webpages have higher quality content, more external referral links, and more user interaction will be at the top of the SERP.

The SEO process includes six general categories:

Research

which includes business research, analysis of competitors, current status analysis, and keyword search

Planning and strategies

 Including content management decisions, building links to a website, managing the presence of a social media platform, and using technology strategies.

Implementation

where development decisions on the web pages of the site and the website as a whole are made

Monitoring

where the work of web spiders, traffic, search engine levels, and other metrics are monitored to generate reports for testing.

Assessment

which includes evaluating the concise results of the strategy (and its implementation) against the stated principles of the SEO process

Maintenance

where both minor or major problems with website performance are handled as they arise (e.g., new content that needs to be strategically improved)

The SEO process has largely focused on live links and ranking of search engine results; however, it is often accompanied by aggressive measures (e.g., paid search ads) and is often part of regular marketing campaigns.
